Maybe an outline might him get it. Here's a lame
start. Correct any errors.

Indo-Iranian

I. Iranian: various brances, see Wikipedia

II. Nuristani

III. Indo-Aryan
1. Western IA --traces found in Mitanni, possibly in
Black Sea IA and in IA substrate in Iranian
2. Dardic (although possibly a 4th branch according to
some, and a few claim it's Iranian): Kashmiri et al.
3. SE Indo-Aryan (for lack of a better term coming to
mind): Sanskrit et al.

Kind in mind that Iranian was once to the north of IA
and pushed it south, absorbing it in Iran et al.

The difference between Avestan and Old Indic? I'm
guessing similar to that between W. Romance languages
(other than French) or between Slavic languages. Can
anyone who knows Sanskrit but never studied Avestan
back me up on that?
