So why is the zero grade attested with a short vowel (Greek kyn-,
Sanskrit çun-)? (I think the laryngeal can be dealt with in Germanic
*hunðam > English _hound_.)

Have you got a cognate for English _dog_? Note that the final /g/
cannot regularly derive from Proto-Germanic.
