Keep in mind that the Vedas were not finished until
India was a classic civilization. The Vedas were not
some sort of travel diary or chronicle that were
updated every day during the journey over the Hindu
Kush. They evolved into what they are today. They
began to be written at least 1,000 years after the
Indo-Aryans became a sedentary people.
But many so-called primitive peoples have very
sophisticated poetry.

There are also parallels to the Vedas in the Popol
Vuh, written about 500 years or so after the Quiché
invaded Highland Guatemala and formed a sophisticated
civilization. Unfortunately, most Mayan literature
from all regions was destroyed during or shortly after
the conquest.

The Aztecs, who were originaly nomads, then
mercenaries, and finally the overlords of an empire,
also had a brilliant literature, most of which was
destroyed.
