According to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vistula_Veneti
the achaeologist Okulicz thinks the Pomeranian culture was the Veneti.
That would explain this set of common words:

but why the 'a-grade'?
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/cybalist/message/45139
check Jouppe's page for vousi "year"

or even this?

As to whether the western IE dialects of Latin, Germanic, Celtic
borrowed from a IE language at the 'a-stage', here is list of
Latin/Germanic correspondences (Kuhn leaves out the Celtic example,
from 'Ablaut, /a/ und Altertumskunde'):

ad, Gmc. at 'to'
(*atnos >) annus, Goth. aTn 'year'
aqua 'water', Goth. ahWa 'river'
arcus 'bow', OE earh 'arrow'
axilla 'arm pit', OS ahsla 'axle'
=========
a < H2e.

caput, ON ho,fuD 'head'

This word exists in PY *s'aG- < *kap-
so it certainly does not prove anything.

hasta 'spear', Goth. gazd 'sting'
(*mazdos >) ma:lus 'bar', OHG mast

*z is H2 hence a

natrix 'water snake', goth. nadr- 'adder'
ratio: 'computation', Goth. raTjo: 'number, account'
salix, OHG salaha 'meadow'

Latin from s°l-

sapi:re 'taste', OS af-sebbian 'perceove'
saxum 'stone', OHG sahs 'knife'

Latin anomic variant of *s.ek "stone"

Cf. Arabic s.axr
OHG from *sek "to cut"
Two different roots.

tace:re, Goth. Tahan 'be silent'
vadum, ON vaD 'ford'

Further, the 'a-language' did not provide western IE with words for
navigation on rivers and lakes:

*srew-, *plew-, *ere- ('row')

but it did those for coast and sea navigation:

Latin aqua, amnis, lacus, stagnum, mare, sa:l, vadum

Obviously most are words with H2 > a.
Mari is < m°ri
sa:l is a LW < *zah-l- "sea-salt"

from which one might infer that IE reached the coast of Northern
Europe at a time where it accepted many a-loans.

All this is a multi-layered fancy, once again.

Apart from *sa(:)l "salt"
the rest is good old PIE
