Carl, the word is listed in Pokorny as *ner-(t-).

*ner- means 'strong (vital) man'

*ner-to- means 'strength (vitality)'

I think there is a good possibility that the word was originally *no-ró,
'strong will'.

So, 'determined'.

This root is just "human being".

The H2 in h2-ner most probably is ?a-
which may refer to a male
(CF. Berber a- masculine article)
H2- here is most probably not part of the root.
