There is no devoicing. There is no *ghHes-, 'grey'.
There is no *k^es-, 'grey'.
*k^as-, 'ash-gray', is a rare compound of *k^A + *Há(:)s-, 'burn'.
Uncompounded, *k^A can be seen with the derivative suffix in *k^éy-.
With *rA, color formant, in *k^ér-
Reduplicated in Egyptian <kk>, 'dark'.
Another rare compound is *k^A + *wa(:)-, 'wolf', which leads to k^ú-n-,
'dog'.
This can even be seen in Sumerian gi-6-gi-6, 'black'.
