I differ.

I think length is at issue.

Without length (even if subsequently shortened by attrition after the period
of the heyday of *A), I believe *a would become *A.

Short vowels become *A (*é/*ò/*°/*Ø); *a should be no exception.

Notice, I like Meillet's idea of *°.

If the 'laryngeal' theory be correct, I suppose we should have to accept
that a vowel can be colored only while *H is still present.
