Well, yes and no. If they can back up what they say
with plausible reconstructions and are flexible enough
to take criticism, something can be gained.
Obviously too many languages have come and gone to
truly reconstruct a World Language or Proto-Human but
the exercise can be fulfilling.

I have to remind you that
Bedrich Hrozny was first rebuked by
Indo-Europeanists when he was looking for help
in working on Hittite.
They laughed at him because he couldn't
tell them if the vowel in "water"
was long or short in Hittite.
And before that,
A norwegian J.A. Knudtzon had understood
in 1902, that Anatolian was part of PIE.
But he was drowned in a flood of scorn.
There was a time when Hittite was long-range.

Some of you deserves disparagement.
