I don't think PIE *needs* to be conclusively established.
It's like saying that linguistics is yet to be conclusively established
as a scientific field.
My point of view about orthodox PIE is that the perimeter of PIE family
is unfinished. More languages are IE than is usually considered.
The perimeter of Nostratic is too big and Uralic is definitely not
a close relative of PIE, so that nostraticists are headed into a wall.
