So what's your timeline?
My impression is that Slavic didn't reach the Volga
until after it displaced Baltic and Uralic from
present day N. Belarus and European N & C Russia.
Polish would seem to be the most conservative Slavic
language in the sense that it preserves nasals, has a
complex grammar (unlike much of S. Slavic) but I think
Piotr could answer that better.
