If it is indeed *gwhedh-s, then the process would be as you describe,
though not necessarily in that order. The combination *dh-s would have
simplified early on to -ts-

> 1. gwhedh-s- > thedh-s- (gwh before e > th )
> 2. thedh- s- > theth-s- (loss of voiced aspirates)??
> 3. theth-s > ??

*thet-s would become the attested root thess-.
This is found with -a- forms (eg thessanto, thessamenos), so for dictionary
pourposes a middle infinitive ending -sthai is added to the thessa- stem.

We could reach the same form from *gwhedh-i- with reduction of *-dhi-
to -ss-.
