In my opinion,

Saami is clearly a Uralic language

with strong connections with Finnic and Mordvin.

The ""problem"" with Saami,

is that Finland dreams of being autochtonous Europeans

and Hungary enjoys being from Siberia.

So depending if you ask a Fenn or a Hungarian,

you will get conflicting ideas about Uralic Homeland.

Because Saam people are obviously Asiatic, "yellow race"

they are a major obstacle against Autochtonous Dream.

And some people even reject the connection of Samoyed

with Finno-Ugric, for the same reason.

Saami and the rest of Western Uralic is an intrusion from

Siberia into Europe.

You cannot choose your ancestors.

According to Ante AIkio (sp?) the Saami (i. e.
residents of Scandinavia) originally spoke another
language before the arrival of Uralic
I've seen conflicting ideas re Saami
1: it's a form of Balto-Finnish
2: it's a separate branch of Uralic
