I'd start with something like *bHél-o:n or *bHl-é:n (the latter, with
the "Lindeman treatment" of the onset, i.e. *bH&le:n, would explain
Germanic *Bulan- > OE bula, ON boli), and possibly a heteroclitic
r/n-stem like *bHól-r./*bHél-n- as well, giving rise to a family of
derivatives. The most widespread one seems to have been *bHl.-n-o-,
hence Gk. pHálle: and pHállos; pHál(l)aina could derive more directly
from *bH(&)le:n via *bHl.-n-ih2, with the usual Gk. realisation of the
final sequence, cf. Ved. taks.n.í: vs. Gk. téktaina, surely involving
some analogy.
