I'm talking about OE cennan 'make known', ON kenna 'teach, know',
OHG bichennan 'know'. You may argue with the possible derivation and
sound changes I reconstruct, but I don't believe the root is wrong.

The causatives happen to become the same because of sound changes.

That's not what I wanted to talk about as an example.

But why would only the 0-grade remain in both? What do you say
caused the optional *gYnYoxW+ in PIE? There's also:

*kWn.ax+d+ > Skt kha:d- 'chew'; *kWxan.d+ > Lith kandu 'bite' with
met. like *xakYmo:n. > *kaxmo:n. > OCS kamy.

The kWn. > kWH is also seen in *xukWn.o+ > ukhá-. Skt had ana. kW >
kWH in khanítra- to make the noun follow most of the verb forms (not
Avestan).
