Gk. (w)oíkos and Lat. vi:cus reflect *wóik^-o-s. Oxytone *woik^-ó-s
(with an agentive meaning) is visible in Skt. ves'á- 'neighbour'. Goth.
weihs is an s-neuter (*wéik^-o/es-). The root noun is best visible in
Indo-Iranian, but Slav. *vIsI 'village' and Balt. *weik^- in compounds
(master/lady of the house), as well as similar data from Albanian,
confirm its PIE status. Ger. Weiler is an old loan from Latin.
