Dansk Etymologisk Ordbog, which is where I copied the etymology from,
says "beredt, rustet, fuldstændig".

Torsten is copying. This is the standard etymology. The sense "cook"
is not in DEO; I remembered it from another account of the same
etymology. If you want to get rid of the anomaly *gWHer- > warm / garo
you'd have to work harder than that.
