As already explained by other members, the Germanic word was thematic
(with *-wa- < *-w-o-):

Gen.sg. pre-Gmc. *bHorw-o-s(j)o > PGmc. *Barwasa > Anglo-Frisian *bærwæs
> OE bearwes

The -u ~ -o in the nom.sg. reflects PGmc. *-waz.

Slavic *borU is a genuine u-stem, but in Slavic the light/heavy
distinction was levelled out, yielding a uniform genetive ending *-u <
*-e/ou-s for all u-stems.
