*a:no/eH2 `ring, circle'. 1. Alb unazë `ring, seal-ring' from
expressive geminated form *a:nn-aH2 > Palb *ona:, extended in
diminutive suffix -zë. Expressive geminated form explains the lack of
rhotacism in Tosk dialect. Due to mechanical regulation of the accent
in penultima we get unazë with regular o > u if /o/ is in unstressed
position, cf. Alb kunorë < Lat corona, Alb mulli < Lat molinum etc.
Raising of central vowel /ë/ to /a/ could be noticed also in Alb
këlbazë `phlegma, sputum` from kalbëzë: Lat a:nus `ring, anus',
diminutive form annulus `ring, signet ring', OIr ainne, Arm annur,
all `ring'.
Led by strange accent, Meyer thinks that it is derived from supposed
Lat form *vira:na (EW 457); Orel starts from unë < Palb *wanda: related
to Arm gind `ring' and Çabej reconstructs proto-form *wenda.
I doubt that *a:nos/eH2 is related to *ank- 'to bend', oldest form
*H2enk-, colored to *H2ank-, so preform should be *H2en- metathesized
in *eH2n- > a:n-. So, we could exclude as well this root from a-
vocalism. (Pokorny a:no- 47.)
