The simplest and most convincing analysis of the Greek word is
*melit-ih2 > *melitja > Ion. mélitta, Att. melissa (divergent dialectal
developments). In view of Skt. madHu-lih- (m.), *meli(t)-lig^H-ih2
'honey-licker' (with haplology) is not impossible but complicated a
little beyond necessity. Alb. mletë looks like the same word as in Greek
with the ordinary feminine ending *-a: substituted for *-i: at some
point in its history. No *-tt- at any rate.
