Both *dhèxY+ and *bhàx+ / bhux+ could provide the
meaning. Since 'set, put' seemed to have the derived
meaning 'set down (rules/laws), judge, choose'
something like 'having two choices' seems like the
best choice for me.
Since other Latin words derived from *bhàx+ / bhux+
just end in -bus (superbus), I don't know why this
would be different from the others (that is, why +yo+s
here?; I realize this isn't itself a certain disproof
of your idea). I'm also not sure why *u: would
disappear. What syllabification or sound changes are
you considering?
