That's what underlies HavlĂk's Law: consecutive syllables with lax high
vowels are gathered up into [S W] pairs (S = strong, W = weak). As this
is about the most common rhythmic structure on Earth, one can speculate
that the jers, having become lexically accentless, just settled down
into the default natural pattern.
