Sorry, I've been on a Mediterranean ethnonyms kick recently .... :)
Anyway, I've seen it suggested that the name of the Oscans/Osci/Opsci
(*op-sko-?) is connected with the name of the Ausones/Ausoni. This
seems odd to me. Does it assume some kind of Greek misinterpretation of
the vowel=labial in op- as aw-? My gut feeling would have been that the
names are unrelated and that that of the Ausones was a extension of a
root like *aus- ("shine"), if only because it seems a better match.
Thoughts?
