I think Watkins is simply wrong here. <fa:num> _can_ derive from
*dH&1s-nĂ³- via *Tasno- > *fazno- > *fa:no-. But neither *dHeh1s nor
*dH&1s can yield <fa:s>: there are no conditions for compensatory
lengthening.

I know those variants. They don't help much.

I don't have to stamp my approval on every etymology proposed here, do
I? I said nothing because I have little to say about this particular
word. A derivation from *dHeh1- seems formally possible, though it
usually takes more than pointing out a possibility to justify an etymology.
