My Ukrainian colleagues claim him as Ukrainian. But, in any case, if he was a Pole, he was attracted to like, rather than opposites.

That is not surprising considering the languages are so different. Eg. 
the name of the Russian composer Tchaikovski (which ever way it is
spelt) is obviously South Polish, since corresponding form in North
Polish is Teacupski.
