Hound was attested much earlier. dog is from docga (vel sim.) c. 900-1000 CE or so and is of unknown origin --perhaps Celtic da cu "good dog", as I believe Miguel Carrasquer Vidal pointed out a few years back

I hope Piotr will correct me if my premise is wrong, but
wasn't "hound" attested much earlier, and much more frequently in Old
English? If so, the two situations are not comparable.

My own best guess since the evidence for a really probable etymology for "dog" does not seem to be available is PIE *dhengh-, 'strong' or 'fast'.
