Seems likely, though apparently for a somewhat different
sound (assuming that you mean Watkins' *ger&2-, whence
assorted bird-names).

I mean Pokorny 2. *ger-, , which includes bird-names.
 
I presently have four dogs, and have had dogs for all my now long life. It has never occurred to me to ever represent their growls as krrrrr (your onomatopoeic guess) but only as grrrrrrr.
 
Perhaps I just do not hear their growls properly?
