You don't have to go that far afield. Here in the West Midlands (centred
around Birmingham, England's 2nd city) there are a number of very different
regional or local dialects, with long histories. Many of these pronounce
all <ng> as /Ng/, even word finally. My partner, for example, refuses to
believe that <singer> and <finger> do not rhyme exactly; and <sing> has a
distinct /g/ at the end.
