Well, Pokorny has it simply as 'long' (#333, pp196-7).

It might be quite ancient - how sure are we that *dHelg (#389, p247)
'needle' and *dHelg / *dHelgH 'hit' (#390, ib.) do not have the same
root? I suppose the similarity of sound may have lead to a greater
similarity of meaning.
