*dap- `to apportion (in exchange)'. 1. Alb. dâm/dëm `damage' could be
easily derived from *dop-no > dâmno> dâm (cf. sup-no > Alb. <gjumë>,
*Hep-no > amë `river', *lubh-no > Alb. <i lumë> `blessed, happy'), but
till now it supposed to be from Lat. <damnum>. 2. Denominatives <dëm-
toj> `to hurt, damage' and <dën-oj> `to punish' are hard to be
explained from Latin source, even if we assume that late one is from
Italian origine. But, if we have in Albanian –tn- > -n-, as I have
proved with many examples, then I think that <dënoj> `to punish' is
derived from *dëmt-noj (cf. <zbunoj> `to coajole, caress' from <zbut-
noj> of verb <zbut> `to soften', <zonë> acc. fo <zotnë>, <monë>, acc.
form of <motnë>). 3. From this root exists probably Albanian
transitive verb <zhdëp> `to beat up'. 4. Idioms <shkoi dëm> `lost
without any use, without being caressed', <çoi dëm> `to spoil, lost'
speak that Alb. <dâm/dëm> seems much more to be an inherited word than
a loan.: Lat. damnum `damage': OI duan `poem'. (Pokorny da:dH- 175.)
