As I once mentioned, in north-western Romanian subdialects, the
pronunciation is neither ['gja-r@], nor ['gea-r@], but with a
palatal [g] or a palatal [d] -- so much so that there is no need
for any [ja] or [ea] diphtong. (Your own subdialect has it too.)

Take the German synonym die Klaue < Old High German klawa
"claw, talon; paw" < Germanic *klewo- < *PIE gleua_

cf. Maul- und Klauenseuche "mouth and claw disease"
cf. klauen "to steal" < OHG klawen
cf. mit Klauen und Zähnen "tooth and nail", e.g. to defend

This word was (at least) once discussed on the list.
