I mean, many of my Anglo-Saxon colleagues are far more excellent
scholars than I can ever hope to become, so there's no need to flatter

No, it was an accidental case of falling in love. I still specialise in
English, but my juvenile infatuation has developed into a more general
and deeper interest in historical linguistics. Just the natural course
of things.

When I decided to apply for a post, back in the 1980s, some of my
friends thought I was a mental case. They were probably right.
