Cast is a loan from Nordic.-- Yes, I was aware of that. I'm fond of those Scandinavian words.
But the whole point in what I have been told is that "stones" gives
an inappropriate association with testicles. Therefore you throw (or
cast) rocks in some places on the North American continent.
Obviously not in Canada.
-- Oh! I never for once realized that this was a hilarious joke! I really can't think of anyone in my lifetime referring to testicles as "stones" (it's usually the semi-vulgar "balls", "nuts", or very rarely "jewels" or, at least in print, "eggs", as far as I've encountered, and of course the exclusively British "ballocks"). I really didn't know about avoiding saying "stones" because of this association.
