This problem, however, is not more problematic than the
one where you as an Englishman can't "throw stones" in America, you
must "throw rocks" (so I've been told)-- I live in Canada; as far as I know here it's only "throw stones" if you mean as a punishment, or if they are not particularly large (which is usually the case if you're throwing them); I probably have heard "throw rocks" but I can't remember any such occasion, even on the ubiquitous American TV we get here.
I beg you to have forbearance with this lengthy and garrulous
attempt to clear up earlier confusions I've caused.
-- Please don't apologize, you are providing much entertainment and information, and are impressing me greatly with your excellent command of English. But what about the origin of "trin"? I know it's very off-topic but I have no idea where or what it can have come from.
