I've no idea what it was, to tell the truth. From the point of view of
PIE grammar something like *menth2- is an unanalysable morpheme and can
function as a verb root; it can even form a present stem with a nasal
infix like this: *//mnt-ne-h2-// --> *mn.tnah2-ti (Skt. matHna:ti, with
analogical /tH/). This of course doesn't preclude the possibility of a
deeper etymology.
