Erm, I thought PIE was copula-less?

Perhaps

'normal' u: > eu/ou/u
'low, intimate' u: > u:

cf. the dialects of Dutch that differentiate huis/mu:s.

"Son" would belong to the 'intimate' sphere (like "mouse").
