An excellent point!
However, I would have this one caveat.
In reconstructing pre-PIE, I have come to believe that there were two /r/
phonemes, only one of which produces the [r]/[l] variations we see in Old
Indian (Gosh, I wish there were a better word!).
The variety of /r/ that produces this variation, shows up in PIE as [l].
But this is all based on analysis which will not be accepted by most on this
list and probably any other, as well).
