Certainly it's athematic, the vowel of the ablauting suffix //-eH2-//
is not the thematic vowel. It is all based on the derivation of the
Vedic acc. mahá:m from *még^-oH2-m. which, if correct, shows that
there was a vowel in the suffix and that the laryngeal did not belong
to the root. If for some reason that is *not* correct, there are some
other possibilities: Then the nom.sg. masc. *még^&2-s could be from
**még^H2-s with lengthening-and-shortening due to the stem-final
cluster; and Toch.B ma:ka 'much' (A ma:k) could be from *mé:g^&2, the
regular product of a putative root-noun neuter **még^H2. But then we
still need to find a place for mahá:m.
