I want to apologise for stating the obvious. I hasten to admit that we
all know the vowel stays because it's thematic (as in statives derived
from thematic stems, like *sene-h1-je/o-). This doesn't imply anything
as regards the origin of the *h2 in factitives. It may be a nominal
suffix (collective) but other possibilities also deserve to be
considered. Sorry again.
