How about this:
Some people stayed aware of the composite nature of the new thematic
genitive and pronounced it *-oz-yo (and if the sibilant hadn't been
voiced before, the following /y/ now saw to that).
And some people had no clue and pronounced *-e-syo.
Note: /o/ before voiced, /e/ in open syllable.
