Patrick:

Others will be the judges if I have but I think I have.

Here, I can furnish the examples.

It is probably easiest to see with PIE initial *a-.

Earliest PIE had a morpheme *ha (from Nostratic /Ha/ not /ha/), 'water',
that had combined with other morphemes to form roots in PIE.

1. *hab-, 'water' (+ *bha,'chin' = 'bank'; OR +*ba, 'split' = 'stream,
rivulet, creek')
2. *had(u), 'water-course' (+ *da, 'side'; -*wa, dual)
3. *hap-, 'water' (+ *pa, 'flat' = 'surface of the water')
4. *hapero-, 'bank' (+ *ro, part')

An adjective formed from this morpheme meant 'reflective, gleaming'

1. *hay-, 'burn, illuminate' (+ *ye-, '-like')

which entered into further combinations:

1. *haidh- (*hayédh-), 'burn, illuminate' (+ *dhe-, 'finger' = 'flame';
Sumerian êzi, 'flame')
2. *hayer, 'day, morning' (+ *re:-, 'come')
3. *hayos- (*hayés-), 'metal' (+ *so-, formant of color adjectives and
nouns)
4. *haisk-, 'clear, bright, illuminating' (+ ?)

also:

1. *hakWa:-, 'water' (+ *kWa, 'quantity')
2. *hal-, 'burn' (+ *la:, 'cause one's self to be ... = cause one's self to
be bright')
3. *hal-, 'white, gleaming'
4. *halbh(o)- (*halábhe), 'white (animal)' (+ *bhe, formant of animal names)
5. *halbhi-, 'barley' (+ *ye, '-like'); wild barley - deer-food(?) elaphos,
'deer'
6. *halgh-, 'frost' (+ *gha-, 'hang' = icicle)
7. *halu-, 'garlic'(+ *wa-, 'set' = 'garlic bulb')
8. *halu-, 'alum' (+ *wa-, 'set' = 'clear white crystals')
9. *har-, 'nut' (+ *ra-, 'color' = 'white')
10. *har(e)g^e (+ *(n)g(^)e-, 'liquid' = 'milk')
11. *haryo, 'master' (+ [*ye, '-like']; +*(y)o, 'testicle' = 'male white
man')
12. *hat(e)r-, 'fire' (+ *to-, 'heat')
13. *haw(e)-, 'water' (+ *wa:-, 'set'; 'waters')
14. *hawes-, 'dawn' (+ *we:sa-, 'web'; OR *wa:sa:, 'watery-state' = 'dew')
15. *haug-, 'gleam' (+ *gha-, 'hang' = 'reflection')

Roots with initial *?a also maintzined the *a into PIE.
