In Norway, the uvular (or sometimes velar) R is used in the southern
and south-western costal areas.
The dialects using R also differ in other aspects: The letter groups
rt, rd, rs, rl are here pronounced rgularly as Rt, RD, RS and RL.
In the majority of dialects that are using apical r, however, these
letter groups are pronounced as single retroflex consonants, tot as
two different sounds, actually the same phonems as those typical of
the languages of India. These Norwegian dialects even have that hard
retroflex flap sound you can hear in languages of India. The retroflex
pronounciation even occurs across word boundaries if one word ends in
an r, and the next begins with t,d,l or s. Because of this
differences, the dialects using R and those using r make a very
different acoustic impression on the listener.
