I was saddened when I first realised this but now I´m really angry. But
this history loss has been going on for a century now. There have even
been cutbacks on history and language lessons in swedish schools. When
I went to school we had what they called ´common language knowledge´ as
a subject for two years. Practically it meant a brief look at latin and
a teeny look at indoeuropean studies. If it hadn´t been for my genuine
interest in speech studies I would have been very disillusioned by this.

This history loss actually started after WW2 when the consensus was
that "we need to root out everything that was related to the nazis".
But when they sweeped out that they sweeped away everything else too.
There haven´t been a real breakthrough in swedish linguistics for ages
now, at least not in the etymology department.
