Assume the optative was *i'ax^ (i with high tone,
a, palatalized velar fricative). Then, i and u became
y and w before vowels. The high tone remains and
moves onto the preceding vowel. If the preceding
sound is a consonant, however, the tone is blocked and
moves forward to the following vowel. What was once
the same ending after C and V now varies:
bha`rai'ax^am x^asi'ax^am
bha`ray'ax^am x^asy'ax^am
bha`ra'yax^am x^asy'ax^am
bha`ra'yax^am x^asya'x^am
The high tone now precedes the phonemes of the
optative ending for V-stems and is on it for C-stems.
Now *a without a tone is deleted before glides and
consonants that can become vocalic, then after. High
tone causes a>o, low tone causes a>e.
bha`ra'y_x^_m x^_sya'x^_m
bha`ra'ix^m. x^.sya'x^m.
bhe`ro'ix^m. x^.syo'x^m.
If x^ follows my theory, o'x^>e'x^
Only first tone remains, tone becomes accent
bhe`ro'ix^m. x^.sye'x^m.
bhe`roix^m.
'bheroix^m.
