I tend to think that:-
The ordinary h1 was glottal stop.
The second h1 that some people proposed, was /h/.
h2 was the voiceless epiglottal fricative, as in Arabic h2ams = "five",
Muh2ammad (the name).
h3 was the voiced epiglottal fricative, as in Arabic h3ayn = "spring
(water source)" or "eye".***
Patrick:I agree that these four sounds underlie IE *H but by the time we reach PIE, I believe we have only /?/ (Hittite Ø) and /h/ (Hittite h).***
