If Alb. <gruni/gruri> is treating isolated from other derivatives,
one may suggests everything.
The idea that Alb. <grun> is borrowing from Dalmatian (Veglia) is
not a new one: G. Meyer, based on Miklosich etymology, has suggested
that it's a lona from Lat. <granum> through Dalmatian, exactly not
knowing how to explain the vowel /u/. This explanation was accepted
by Meyer-Lübke Gr Gr I 2 1042. According to A. Mayer, this word had
entered very early in Illyrian, where, according to him, /a:/
yielded in many cases /u/. This was accepted by Walde-Hofmann I 618.
Dalmatian source was adopted before also by Sandfeld, but was
doubted by N. Jokl Litteris 4, 197. Skok thinks that it was borrowed
from Romanian <griu> for reason that Dalmatia never exports the
grain. This was backed up by Pushcariu Dacoromania IV 1373, LR I
266. Barich I 184 vv. Arhiv II 414 thinks that it is inherited,
reconstructed a basic form *grudr-, akin to Lit. <grudas>, Let.
<grands>, OHG <gruz>. Also for La Piana (SLA I 66, 94) grurë/grunë
is inherited and is related to Lat. <granum>, OCS <zr&no> and within
Albanian to <grij> 'grind'. (Çabej, SEFSH IV, pp.296-297).
Attested forms: grunë (Buzuku), grunëtë (Budi), grunë (Bardhi).
Derivatives: grun•aje 'field sowed with grain', grun•ar 'granary'.
In adjective <i grynjë/i grynjtë> Jokl had noticed the impact of i-
Umlaut.
In Geg dialect adjective is <(i,e) gry•të>, where I see a participle
in -to, so we may assume freely a proto-form *gru:- < *g'r.H- > griV-
> *grwi:->*gru:- (cf. aorist <piu < pivi, or lau<lavi of verb
<pi> 'to drink').
