4.1. háp âto openâ: Hittite <apa> âafterwardsâ, âagain, backâ;
Hieroglyphic Hittite <apan(a)> âback, againâ, Lycian <epn>; Skt.
<ápa> âaway, forthâ; Greek <apo>, Lat. <ab> âfromâ; Greek
<aps> âbackwards, back, againâ; Lat. <absque> âwithoutâ. On the
basis of non-Albanian forms Sturtevant reconstructs IH *hep-. This
fits the Albanian evidence perfectly (Proto-Albanian *hápo:). In
Albanian derivative <prapë> âagainâ it appears we have *per- > *prV-
plus *hap-; in that case *h seems to be subsequently lost after /+/,
or else after close juncture.
[I guess that we have the same formation in <predhë> âmissile,
projectileâ, derived from *per- > *prV- plus *hedh âto throw, jumpâ]
I think that Hamp forgot to mention other important derivative:
<prapa> âbackâ (cf. Hittite and other forms, that contain this
meaning too). Standard Alb. form <mbrapa> âid.â, derived from prefix
*ambhi- + *per- + *H2ep-o. Synonym of this adverb is Tosk <pas>, Geg
<m(b)as>, which to my view, is derived from athematic form *ambhi +
*H2ep-ti > mbë + hapty > mbas (pt > t and *ty > s). Geg variant <
(i,e) mbrâmë> âlastâ, derived from double prefixed nasalized form m-
+ prV- + hamp-. Other interesting derivative are: adjective <i
mrapshtë/i prapshtë> âregressiveâ derived from *per- + *H2epo + *-
sto, abstract noun in â"i <prapshti/mbrapshti> âregressionâ (today
<prapavajtje> âto go backâ); cf. <mbarësi> âprogressionâ, derived
from Alb. adjective <i parë> âfirstâ, adverb <para> âforwardâ. I
found more recent formations Alb. verb <zâ¢brapâ¢s> âto back up,
retreatâ (synonym <zâ¢byth>), <përâ¢hap> âto spreadâ,
<prapanicë> âassâ (synonym <bythë>).
First of all, I am interested to know is it possible to be derived
from a simple root *H2ep-o (thematic form), *H2ep-ti (athematic
form) and *H2emp-o (nasalized form) such amount of derived words:
1. Thematic form *H2p-o: hap âto openâ, prapë âagainâ, prapa âbackâ,
përhap âto spreadâ, prapaâ¢nicë âassâ, parapaâ¢nik âregressiveâ (i
prapë/i mbrapshtë), prapaâ¢mbes âto stay backâ,
prapavajtje âregressionâ (prapshti/mbrapshti);
2. Athematic form: *H2ep-ti: pas/mbas âback, afterâ,
përmas/përpas âon the backâ, i pasmë / i sprasmë âlastâ (Gavrill
Dara i Ri, âKënga e sprasme e Balësâ - Last Balaâs song);
3. Nasalized form: *H2emp-ti: i mbrâmë âlastâ, maybe
<mbâmje/mbrëmje> âevening, literally last part of the day,
<mbrëmë> âlast nightâ etc.
Any suggestions, help?
