My guess would be that it rather refers to the conversation
among the women themselves. It's a common stereotype that
women engage in idle conversation more than men do, and the
stereotype applies especially to groups of women that are
conspicuous in public places (e.g. fishwives, prostitutes).
The idea is, I suppose, that old whores have a smaller
clientele than young whores, so more time to chat among
themselves.
