In Swedish and Norwegian there is some evidence of an earlier
pronounciation of r in an English-like fasion. R is typically
pronounced as the traditional trill, but the combinations rs, rt, rd
rn, and rl have evolved into new retroflex sounds/phonems.

rs - a retroflex spirant

rt and rd - retroflex stops

rd - sometimes a retroflex flap, like the soun found in Indic
languages

rl - a retroflex lateral

I think this may point to an earlier retroflex pronounciation of r.
