Expanding on Miguel's "cf.", I quote from Buck's "Synonyms" "the
early philosophers (Pythagoras first, according to tradition)
applied <kosmos> to the universe as an 'orderly arrangement' in
contrast to primeval chaos". But I don't see what light this sheds
on <mir>. From a "soft", "friendly" origin to "peace" and further
to "village community" makes sense, and onward to larger groups such
as all Christendom. But the jump to "world" or "universe" (<miru>
translates <kosmos> in the Bible) seems to incorporate a view of the
World so overly optimistic as to be worthy of a White House press
release.
Anyone shed light on this?
