Thanks. I just had this flash connecting the pilá thing
with *ih2, *ih3 in Greek etc. Haven't had the time to think
through all the ramifications (e.g. any purely nominal stems
with /i/ or /y/ which fail to comply with Hirt's law?). It
would be nice if it could be made to work...

I went to the library yesterday and borrowed Zaliznjak's Ot
praslavjanskoj.., Dybo's Osnovy and an Einführung by
Lehfeldt (+Vermeer), which I'm trying to make sense of in my
mind at the moment. Easier said than done.
